If you’ve ever struggled with low iron… you already know…it’s not just “a little tired.”

It’s the kind of tired that sits in your bones.
The kind where you wake up exhausted.
The kind where even simple things feel harder than they should.

And after years of living like that… I finally did something different.

I got an iron infusion.

And honestly? I’m still a little in awe that it finally happened.

My Story With Low Iron

I’m 38 years old, and I’ve had low iron for as long as I can remember. Literally since my early teens when they first started testing for it.

At this point, I honestly wonder… is it hereditary? Maybe. Probably.

Over the years, I’ve tried it all:

  • Natural supplements
  • Iron pills (so many different types 😅)
  • Diet changes
  • Being consistent… then inconsistent… then trying again

And while some things helped a little… nothing ever truly fixed it.

Why Iron Matters (More Than We Think)

Iron isn’t just “another vitamin.”

It’s essential for:

  • Carrying oxygen through your blood
  • Supporting energy levels
  • Brain function and focus
  • Healthy hair, skin, and nails
  • Preventing anemia

When your iron is low, your body literally struggles to deliver oxygen properly and that’s why you can feel:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold all the time

For me… it was the exhaustion that just wouldn’t lift.

What Is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is when iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through an IV instead of being absorbed through your digestive system.

This is a game-changer for people like me because:

  • Oral iron can be hard to absorb
  • It can take months (or years) to build levels
  • It often causes stomach issues

What’s actually in the infusion?

Most iron infusions in Canada are made from iron-carbohydrate complexes, such as:

  • Iron sucrose
  • Ferric gluconate
  • Ferric carboxymaltose

These are designed to safely deliver iron into your body so it can be stored and used efficiently.

The Reality in Ontario

Here’s something I didn’t fully realize until I started this process…

👉 Getting an iron infusion in Ontario is NOT always easy.

  • Not all regions offer it through public health
  • Not all doctors are willing to approve it
  • Criteria can vary depending on where you live

That part can be frustrating! Especially when you know you’ve been struggling for years.

Private Option (But… 💸)

Yes, you can go privately:

  • Through a naturopath referral
  • Or directly through IV clinics

BUT…

💰 It typically costs $700–$1000 out of pocket
💰 Not all insurance plans cover it

So for many families (mine included), that’s not a small decision.

Finally Approved (Cue ALL the Emotions)

After YEARS of trying to manage this…

I was finally approved.

And I can’t even explain how happy I felt.

Like… finally someone saw it, validated it, and said “yes, let’s fix this!”

The Not-So-Fun Part (But Worth It)

Because my local area doesn’t offer iron infusions through public health…

👉 I had to drive 1.5 hours to the nearest clinic.

And honestly?
Still worth it.

Even with gas prices right now 😅

Because paying out of pocket just wasn’t the right option for us.

What the Appointment Was Like

Before going, I was told to bring:

  • Tylenol
  • Reactine
  • Gravol

(these are just precautionary in case of reactions)

✨ Good news: I didn’t need ANY of them!

The actual process:

  • A bit of paperwork first
  • IV inserted
  • Iron infusion drip begins

⏱️ Total infusion time: about 45 minutes to 1 hour

Afterward:

  • I stayed about 20 minutes for observation (since I went alone)

And that was it.

My Experience (Answered Prayer)

I’m so thankful to say…

👉 I had ZERO side effects
👉 The entire experience went smoothly
👉 It truly felt like an answer to prayer

After so many years of trying and waiting… it just felt like relief.

What Happens Next?

Now I wait and pray that:

  • My iron levels rise
  • My energy improves
  • And it lasts for a while

I’ll also continue:

  • Taking my supplements
  • Supporting my body as best as I can

Because I want to make the most of this.

Let’s Talk

Have you ever had:

  • An iron infusion (Canada or the U.S.)?
  • One of those IV vitamin drips?

I’ll be honest… sometimes I wish we had more access to those here in Canada.

Maybe one day 🤍

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been struggling with low iron…

Please don’t ignore it.
Please don’t assume “this is just how I feel now.”

Keep advocating for yourself.
Keep asking questions.
Keep pushing for answers.

Because feeling better is possible.

And sometimes… it just takes time to get there.
